King lion Nyamakete Bus Disaster Press Release

At about 10:30pm on Wednesday, 7th June 2017, one of the Scania buses from our fleet which was en route to Lusaka, Zambia, from Harare had a tragic accident at the 257km peg along the Harare-Chirundu Highway, near the Nyamakate Shops in Makuti. The accident resulted in the death of 43 people, including our driver, as well as causing serious injuries to many other people.

The Chairman, Management and Staff of King Lion Motorways deeply regret this incident and join the nation in lamenting the loss of life for such a huge number of our customers and fellow citizens.

As owners of the bus involved, we apologise unreservedly to the relatives and families of the deceased in particular, and in general the entire nation of Zimbabwe for this tragic loss. We would like to publicly offer our heartfelt condolences to the families and relatives of the bereaved and pray for strength as we all still try to come to terms with this tragedy We wish a speedy recovery to those who were injured.

While we await the full official report regarding the accident from the investigating team, we are working very closely with the relevant authorities and have taken measures, through our insurers, to assist all victims with appropriate redress even as we appreciate that lives lost cannot be replaced. We would like to thank the Government of Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwe Republic Police, medical and rescue teams and all those who rushed to the scene of the accident to assist, as well as the people of Zimbabwe for their support and comfort.
